ACSE is a platform for and by African Civil Society Organisations that provides a crucial platform for African civil society organizations to enhance their engagement with the ACHPR. Our mission is to create a space to incubate ideas, share knowledge, and build capacity for meaningful advocacy. We empower civil society organizations by strengthening their understanding of both the ACHPR system—its values, standards, and procedures—and the real-world dynamics between key stakeholders, including the African Union, member states, and civil society.
Ultimately, ACSE works with civil society partners to “fill the gap” between the ideal standards of ACHPR engagement and the realities on the ground. Whether it’s navigating delays in concluding observations, managing observer status applications, or more, ACSE is committed to overcoming the challenges that limit the effectiveness of civil society engagement with the ACHPR.
ACSE is convened by Synergia Initiatives for Human Rights; Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa; Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria; Pan African ILGA; MOLI; and Amnesty International.

Our Goal: To strengthen and maintain effective CSO participation at the ACHPR, and enable the ACHPR to effectively uphold human rights standards.

Objectives: Substantively engage CSOs with the ACHPR, fostering a shared vision among CSOs and holding the ACHPR accountable.

Accomplishments: Providing space for side events and capacity building workshops on the ACHPR, Communications Procedure since 2012.
